The Family Place in Dallas has been raising money for their Legacy Campaign, and this year they received a challenge grant from James Dondero, CEO of Highland Capital Management. Dondero has a philanthropic arm of HCM, known as the Highland Dallas Foundation. This challenge grant was announced on October 4th, at the Annual Texas Trailblazer Awards Luncheon. The “challenge grant” is named as such because it has encouraged other companies to be a part of giving for the greater good for these families in Dallas.
The grant will match up to fifty percent of funds, up to a total of $100,000. Since that announcement was made in October, the Legacy Campaign has already raised an additional $200,000 towards their final goal of $2.8 million dollars. The campaign from inception has had a goal of $16.5 million, and was only $2.8 million away as of the luncheon. Dallas Mayor, Mike Rawlings, and Chief of Police David Brown, have both played an active role in furthering this campaign. Their call to action has been heard for some time regarding the violence that families face in the city of Dallas. The mission is to make Dallas a safe place to live and work, and The Family Place helps to accomplish this.
The Family Place exists in order to offer families a safe place to live as well as to receive life-changing services. This includes counseling, medical and dental assistance, and they also receive meals during their stay. This organization is able to serve more than 2,000 families each year and they also act as an emergency shelter. Ann Moody Place, a fellow organization will work with them as a part of the Be Project. Animal shelter will also be a part of this project for those who desperately want to keep their pets close by during their transition.
HCM was founded by James Dondero in 1993, and since that time HCM has aided individuals with private equity, hedge funds, public pension plans, and Dondero and his partner also assist high net-worth individuals.
